One of the questions that I have often heard asked refers to the reasoning behind why someone would choose to carry a handgun concealed on their person while out in public. Sometimes this comes from people that don’t understand why someone would take another class in order to carry a pistol, while in some states, a person is able to openly carry a handgun without a permit. Most often it comes from people that do not view it as necessary because… “That’s why we have police, right?”
To answer the latter part, many people choose to conceal carry because police cannot be everywhere (and wouldn’t that be quite unnerving if they were?). We cannot count on someone else being present to stop any threats that we may face. And even if there are people around, as there most likely will be, they very likely will not do anything to stop your assailant. This can be seen by the massive amount of videos shot of attacks from bystander’s cell phones as they stood by and recorded but did not do a thing. Making the decision to obtain your Concealed Pistol License is just taking a small amount of responsibility for your own safety.
Carrying a handgun on your person is no guarantee that nothing bad will ever happen to you. It is no magic talisman. What it does provide is a way to even the playing field a little bit. A firearm is a great equalizer. With proper training, it can be used to enable a person to be able to defend themselves more efficiently against an attacker even if they are larger, or even if there are multiple attackers. This is a great benefit especially for women and elderly that may be targeted because they are viewed as “soft” targets by predators. This can many times be a false assumption, but it is how criminals think. A firearm, particularly a handgun is a great way to enable you to defend yourself while keeping your attacker out of arm’s reach. This helps you to be able to avoid potentially fatal injuries a little bit easier than relying on hand to hand tactics or even a taser or pepper spray.
All in all, the choice to obtain your CPL and carry a handgun concealed is a choice you will have to make on your own. No one should force you into this decision if you are not comfortable.
